Ritchey Torque Key Review

$16 now or $100 later ... One of my favorite tools is the Ritchey TorqKey. Not only because I always seem to loose my 4mm allen wrench (why is that?), but more importantly the Torque Key gives me peace of mind knowing that my stem and handle bar bolts are properly tight. Properly tight in this case means my handlebar or stem will not slip, loosen or otherwise lead to a nasty crash and I'm not causing undue stress on my components through over-tightening

Ritchey Torque Key

As bicycle components get lighter, paying careful attention to product torque settings has become very important.  Over-tightening is the most common error when installing new components.   Sometimes the effects of over-tightening are immediately obvious as shown in the image below.   Here a customer applied a force far above the recommended torque and the stem clamp failed during the installation.   Other effects of over-tightening are not obviously seen.   Parts can become deformed and carbon layups can crack causing possible catastrophic failures on the road or trail.  The folks at Ritchey are out to protect the over zealous consumer / home mechanic and make sure their products are being properly installed.

Ritchey WCS Stem Overtightened

The TorqKey is a pocket size, 4mm allen head, torque wrench that is preset to 5 Nm of force.  This is the recommended torque setting for their current line of stems.  Ritchey recently introduced a new line of stems that use a smaller 3mm allen head.   No word yet if they will have a new TorKey for these stems but we suspect it is in the works.   5 Nm equates to approximately 45 inch pounds of force which feels surprisingly light if you are used to tightening your stem bolts till they "feel" tight enough.   The Ritchey Torque Key is also compatible with Thomson Elite stems and their recommended 5.5 Nm of pressure.   Please check your manufactures torque specs if you would like to use the Ritchey Torque Key with another brand of stem.

Torq Key Switcheroo

You can pull the hex head out with a pliers (it's just glued in) and put in whatever else will fit, including a 3mm hex, Phillips head, etc. Torque away!
