Yeeesss, back in the old days before single speed mania, people actually used and liked gears. However, the Mech was exposed to trail abuse often breaking or bending the mech hanger. Steel bike have the advantage of just bending the hanger back. This tool did just that. Screw in the knob, move the arm in a circular fashion to identify the high and low spots based on the position of the frame, then just start banging more single track.

the long straight part goes against the head tube and seat tube, and then you twist the little knob until the feeler just touched the rear dropout. then you go around to the other side of the bike to see if it is the same. if not, then the rear triangle is tweaked over to one side.
