2007 Kona 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo Tucson, Arizona
 | | Here's a nice shot of the price Cory had to pay trying to make a pass on | Just an epic one day drive south from Salt Lake City, in the cactus filled desert north of Tucson Arizona, nearly 2000 eager mountain bike racer assembled for the first ever sellout of the 8th annual 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo race.
 | | Sadly, everyone had to bug out early to get back to SLC, so this is our own personal podium picture. (Left to right: Troy Nye, Derryl Spencer, Ryan Miller, Stephen Wasmund) | Cory Marler, his son and former Bikeman team rider Michael, along with two others, one of whom was replacing down-and-out Bikeman Vince Jones – Vinnie was hurting from his month+ long battle with pneumonia – combined to form the BIKEMAN.COM team in the 4 person open division. Big thanks to Evan Pilling and Team Cutthroat racer, Jim Pitkin for stepping in and racing hard for the Bikeman team.
 | | Troy avoiding the cactus | Also present was Bikeman racer Troy Nye (me), racing with some Team Cutthroat buddies on the singlespeed team, “Singlephile” (http://www.singlephile.net). This team was made up of myself (Troy Nye), Ryan Miller, Stephen Wasmund, and Derryl Spencer - pound for pound some of the strongest riders I know; I have race on Clydesdale teams at 24 hours of Moab with some of these guys!
 | | Cory holding off the competition | Like most respectable 24 hours races, this one started off with a Lemans style start at high noon, Derryl starting for Team Singlephile, Cory for Team Bikeman.com. Both teams enjoyed great racing conditions, 70 and sunny, and no catastrophic equipment failures. Three of the four singlespeeders suffered flats, but nothing beyond that. Quality bikes and quality equipment make all the difference. This is somewhere around the 8th 24 hour race we Utah boys have competed in as Bikemen, Hooaa!
 | | Former Bikeman stud Michael (still flying the colors) gets a little air | Escaping the winter doldrums, camping out and enjoying the company of good friends was the top priority. Mission accomplished! Meanwhile, somewhere along the way, the Singlephile team managed to crank out 21 laps en route to a 4th place podium position of 23 teams. Not bad! The Bikeman.com team, anchored by Mr. Marler, cruised to a 34th of 101 finish, churning out 17 laps. Great job boys!
Side notes:
 | | Not to be outdone, Troy gets a little air under the wheels as well | This is beginning to be an expectation any more at these large events – an extremely cool gentleman named Kim Warner (Team “Geo Journeys”) chased me down in the expo area. Even before he spoke I had a fair idea of what he was going to say. See, he was wearing a super-sweet black Bikeman t-shirt. He told me all about the shop in Maine and what a great place it is full of great people. He’s a heck of an ambassador, I tell you what! He would prove to be just one of the many new friends I’d make. The mountain biking community rules! Go Bikeman!
For this race, I was testing Titec’s new Jeff Jones style H-bar. You can read my review here.
If you’d like to peruse the results, you may do so here.
Thanks for reading.
