Central Coast Cyclo-Cross Mountain Bike Race Series
 | | click to enlarge | Next time you find yourself meandering along the El Camino Real (Highway 101) touring the "Missions" as founded by Franciscan Junipero Serra in the early 1700's, stop in Monterey for this race series. If your time is limited then try the Sea Otter. The rolling hills surrounding the Monterey Bay and agricultural Salinas Valley make a great backdrop to a days racing. I linked race #3 to another adventure soon to be unfolded.
But back to racing. These cross guys have an interesting philosophy, they design a course with 97% single track that undulates here and there, grassy expanses with low shrub and tree canopies. A couple of short small chain-ring climbs and believe it or not, no rocks. I lapped the course four times and couldn't find a rock to hit or miss. But that was the Fort Ord East Garrison Park. Race #4 moves a little further east to Toro Park. My understanding is this venue offer a true mountain biking experience with HILLS and ROCKS. I hope to enter race #5 or #6 coming up. The big event however is next month when an expected 50,000 spectators and participants crowd into the Laugna Seca Raceway for the Sea Otter Classic.
