San Diego! So my spring break will once again be spent in sunny San Diego. I am lucky enough to have a brother living in San Diego. I purchased a SouthWest plane ticket a couple months ago when they are dirt cheep. Since USM is a non-traditional school I guess it makes sense to have different spring breaks than any other school in the nation. While I am out here my brother still has to go to school which kind of stinks. But when Justin goes to school in the morning I go out for my ride.
The riding in San Diego kind of sucks. Yeah, the weather is sunny and 60-70 but the roads are crazy. Picture I-95 in Wells, Maine in the summertime with a 3 foot wide bike lane on the side, and you’ve got riding in San Diego. Then take a bunch of broken glass and spread it on the bike lane. Once you go east enough and get away from the city traffic dies down and the riding gets better.
Before I came out here I got in contact with fellow Bikeman.com teammate Matt Hersey. Matt is doing a job switch thing and doing some nursing work here in San Diego. Turns out Matt is only 2 miles or so away! So today Matt and I met up early in the morning and did a group ride from the Trek store. Ever wonder who spends $125 on the Discovery team jersey and another $125 on the Discovery team shorts? People in San Diego do! The people were decked out in multi thousand dollar bikes and hundreds of dollars in clothes. The ride was suppose to be 35 miles. I wasn’t expecting a super fast ride, but a steady pace. I was on my Moto Rapido with some super road slicks, 26x23c or something crazy like that, so I was afraid of getting dropped. Well the ride was a lot of stopping and waiting. ½ into the ride we entered some familiar roads that I had ridden on last year, so I was able to break away and put in some hard efforts. After that a small group of four decided to leave the rest of the folks behind and ride a good pace back to the shop. Thankfully the second half was a good work out so the day wasn’t a waste.
Tomorrow Matt and I are going to hit up a mountain bike race 2 hours north of here. I am not expecting much from the race. I just want to get some racing miles in my legs before the first NORBA next weekend! I’ve been sick for a while, but I am feeling better. Hopefully tomorrow goes well.
