 Mohican Wilderness Loudonville, OH 4/1/2007
Well this was the first race of the 2007 season so I wasn’t sure how things would go. I have been super busy over the winter season and didn’t feel as if I had one of my better off seasons as far as training goes.
This course was also a new venue for me so I was completely unsure what the course would be like. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of climbing that this course had; having not pre-ridden I didn’t know that there would be as much climbing as there was.
When the race started I tried to settle in to the top 3 quickly so that I was in a good position if conditions proved to be in my favor but I quickly found out that this would not be the case.
The first steep muddy, slick climb was only after about ¼ of a mile into the race and I was able to say with the leaders without too much problem. Knowing that this was the first of 3, 9 mile laps I decided to just get into a rhythm and ride my own race seeing how this was the first race of the season I didn’t feel as if I needed to turn myself inside out on day one. As I said before, the course proved to be very hilly and long. I wasn’t sure how far back I was but about halfway thru the 2nd lap I caught the second place guy because he broke his chain. I never saw him again and finished second in my class.
I rode the rest of my race alone and believe me I suffered the whole rest of the race which took me 3:13. The good thing is I didn’t bonk, didn’t crash and my legs felt decent considering it was so long and it was the first race of the season.
