Fat Tire Classic Winding Trails, Farmington, CT Root 66 Race Series 4/29/2007
 | | click to enlarge | Winding Trails is a pretty flat race with some tight sections and short ups and downs. Fast and not too technical is my kind of race. That’s probably not popular among most New England riders but it played to my strengths.
I started and immediately was gapped by seven riders of a field of 10 or so semi pro and pro riders. I made up some ground as my lap times went down through out the race. I lost track of how many laps I had done but fortunately a teammate, Andrew Freye, was kind enough to tell me it was my last lap. Andrew normally finishes with the leaders, but unfortunately had some stomach problems in the final laps falling back a bit. Knowing it was my last lap, I didn’t hold back as much. I passed a couple more riders before finishing second and capturing the Root 66 leader’s jersey.

I think most fast racecourses are the same way. I guess without any difficult sections there are less chances to loose or gain time.

The biggest difference I’ve noticed is my improvement in descending and the technical sections. I think having a larger wheel in front played the biggest part in the improvement but I also have to give credit to my new Avid Juicy Ultimate disk brakes (way more power than the v-brakes I was riding last year and more comfortable to use). Also the Reba Rock Shox (way more progressive and less flexy than the Sid I had grown accustomed to). Over all, I maintain more momentum and control through descents and technical sections.
I normally don’t do that well with technical steep courses (like Mount Snow) so hopefully with the new Carver Ti and the up grades I mentioned, I will ride a bit faster on such courses.
