Beginning in 2001, the 24 Hour phenomenon has captured many a rider. In So-Cal we are fortunate to have two events at Hurkey Creek, on the outshirks of Idyllwild. This charming mountain town situated on the eastern flank of San Jacinto's 10,804 foot peak is normally approached by the well fed and curious from Palm Springs. The 6,000 vertical foot aerial tram transports these thrill seekers to a comfortable 8,516 feet above sea level. We riders, however, never reach those lofty elevations.

Our course received a massive tree clearing and trail re-building after the one rain storm of this season. It is fast. The obligatory "Le Mans" start really pumped up the first lap. A new unofficial 38 minute lap time was recorded. The race officials are currently negotiating with the Forest Service to alter and lengthen this course. Now back to the race.

The Saturday evening festivities were hosted by none other than Krusty the Clown. The kiddie races really are the reason to bring the family up to the mountains. A few age divisions, a couple of prizes and then the serious business began.

Musical chairs! I could not stay for the crowning of the ultimate winner as my volunteer duty in the timing tent was to begin. I am happy to report 21 lap male and 17 lap female winners, with an astounding 31 lap 5 person team victor.

I was troubled as I retired Saturday evening knowing that my team was still struggling in the dudgeon. But as I rose to prepared myself and my trusty single speed steed for my back-to-back laps my heart was lifted to find our movement up the corporate team ladder.

Tex shared our campsite after his decisive 8 hour solo event. At last count all five tables were overflowing in nutritional sustenance.

As team captain I wholeheartedly endorse and recommend the following Team Bikeman gear: Champion clothing, Lake shoes, Lazer Genesis Helmets. A stunning group we were. I known most of us brought multiple bikes just to be surrounded by shifting by SRAM and Avid Juicy Ultimate braking. My Rock Shox Reba World Cup fork still occupies the space between my wife and myself. My week will be complete when my Cyrious Java arrives.
