Next week is National Bike week. What does that mean? Get your ass on your bike and ride to work. If you can only do it one day, how about Friday? That's Bike-to-Work Day. Portland Maine is having a Beginner's night for people interested in learning how to get started and the ins and outs of daily commuting. The session will be held at 7 p.m. on May 16, at Back Bay Bicycle on Forest Ave. in Portland.
There's a great listing by state of all the BTWW activities all across the US on the link above. May is the perfect time to get going. Hopefully the weather will cooperate next week so as not to discourage first timers from giving it a shot. But even if you ride a few days a week, you're gonna see a difference in how you feel, I promise. Plus all the money you save on parking and gas can go towards lunch--cause you're gonna get hungry, guaranteed. For me it hits about 9:45--second breakfast time. Just remember to bring in some munchies the days you ride--you're going to need them.
Oh yeah, a bike, you're gonna need one of those, too. I just recently got my new road bike--a Salsa Campeon with a mix of Ultegra and 105 parts. What a dream to ride. I wouldn't suggest it as a full-time short-distance commuter bike, but for training and racing, it's awesome. The frame and fork are so stiff and responsive, it just begs to be ridden hard. I wish I could begin to push this thing to its limits. I've worn myself out this week already trying to ride faster. This morning my legs were burning.
Whether you train on your way to work, or just ride to get there--it doesn't matter. What matters is getting on the bike and enjoying yourself. So drag out the old 10 speed or three speed or one speed and ride to work next week! Grab a co-worker and share the fun.
See you out there,
