2007 Salsa Campeon
2007 Salsa Campeon
7.16K Run / 40K Bike / 5K Run

Coming off the Nor'Easter kissed Boston Marathon, I was looking forward to some short distance running and getting a chance to wake the legs up a bit. This is the first year that Vermont has offered this race and it was nice to get an early season decent effort in.

Given the amount of climbing on the bike course, I decided to race this one on my road bike - a newly built up Salsa Campeon pimped to the 9's with SRAM Force, the new Mavic Ksyrium ESs and carbon everything. The weather was expected to be nasty so we readied ourself for the worst. My goal going in was to try to complete this thing in under 2 hours. I was racing this one with 4 of my brothers; Jeff, Jim, Jason and Joe. (Kudos for Jim for taking the win on this one!)

The first run started at a very quick pace with the leaders close to sub-5 min mile pace. I settled in a comfy Top-10 position and cruised at 6:30's. The pace was quick but maintainable and I wanted to hit the bike somewhat fresh as I knew the loop around the mountain started with a 4-5 mile gradual grinding hill before the faster terrain unfolded.

The run was over quickly and after a brief transition (47 secs), I was off and cruising. The climbing was all that I expected and it left my legs without much snap for the final 10-15 miles. On the flats and downhills I wished I had the TT bike but the climbs were made more manageable with the road geometry. I finished with a bike split of 1 hr 7 mins which worked out to be an average of 21.3 miles per hour. I was hoping for a bit quicker clip but with the climbing, I figured it was ok. The second transition was super quick at only a bit over 30 seconds. The weather had really turned nasty at this point - dumping what seemed to be buckets at a time on me. I basically cruised the final run - no one passed me and I didn't pass anyone.

My final time was 2:00:18 which gave me a solid 3rd place in my age group and a 24th/94 overall. I am excited to turn to solely bike training now til the end of June when I toe the line with the large fields of the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic Stage Race.

The new bike performed flawlessly and thanks to Cyrius Coffee for waking us up in style on Sunday - Love that Bikeman Attack Blend!

Keep it in the Big Ring~

Jerry
