I did this race last year when it was muddy and it wasn’t nearly as fun. Conditions were pretty dry so a person could really lean into corners. The course was mostly fast rolling up and down, a couple of trees lying across the trail to jump over, one 100ft long super steep climb (just to weed out the single speeders) and a smattering of slippery roots and rocks.

I was a little stressed I might not be able to race. I had broke my brake leaver while racing on of the Canada cup races the previous week. I ordered a new one and the folks at Bikeman assured me that I would get it on time as long as there wasn’t a tornado flooding or swarm of locusts to stop the shipping truck. Everything worked out and the repair was made with some help from Troy Michaud, a really good mechanic and racer who works at my local bike shop.

So the race went like this, there were 13 pro/semi pro riders in my field. At the gun I found my self about 5th. Two of the riders in front of me had mechanicals, John Foley and Michael Cody. They either dropped out or weren’t able to catch back up for whatever reason, so I finished 3rd. Justin Finn won and Nathen Ringquist came in 2nd.

This course seemed to cause a lot of flats. There were at least two descents where you build up a lot of speed and ride into a rock garden. I was lucky enough to get through without any problems but a lot weren’t so fortunate. I would strongly suggest using tubeless to anyone doing this race in the future.
