Team Bikeman was well represented at the Deer Valley Pedalfest this year and fortunately the snow from a late spring storm had cleared off just in time for race number 7 of the ICUP mountain bike series. This race was my first ICUP race of the year so I was really excited to get back on the dirt again.

My wife Beth and I arrived early so I had time to handle the onsite registration. When we arrived Troy Nye was already there. He was grumbling about the rule to never mess with your bike before a race then proceeded to list all of the things that he had swapped, fixed or changed the night before. Despite his best efforts the bike was running well.

After my registration chores were finished I pulled the Salsa Dos Niner out of the car and started to prep for the race. I put a little Slick Willy Slick-n-Dry Lube on my SRAM PC991 chain, slid into my Champion Systems Bikeman kit applied a little Greyhound Juice Original Formula muscle warming salve on my back, thighs and calves and a little Greyhound Juice Anti-Friction Cream on my under carriage. I donned my Lazer Genesis helmet and headed to the start line to warm up with Aaron Smith, Tim White, Dave Leikam and Troy.

This being my first ICUP race of the year I did not have high expectations and that is about how my race went. I started towards the back of the pack on the first climb up little stick then hung out with a group of four guys from my category until the second climb up little stick where they dropped me. I rolled in 23rd out of 26 in Sport Men 40 plus.

Dave Leikam rode a solid race with very few mistakes. Dave started strong and moved up in the pack to take 10th placed and earn his best finish ever in the Sport Men 40 plus class. Troy Nye competed in the Sport Men 40 plus also. Troy was riding his single speed today and dreaming of his Salsa Mamasita for tomorrow. Troy crossed the line in 7th place. Aaron Smith continued his strong showing in the Sport Men 30 to 34 category. Aaron brought it home in 4th place for this race and is currently ranked 3rd in the category for the season series.

Tim White had some drama in the Expert Men 30-39 race. About 2 minutes into the race Tim dropped his chain on a narrow section of single track. Unfortunately for Tim the whole crew was lined up right behind him so he had to wait a few moments to hook onto the tail end of the line and into last place. With the drama over Tim was able to lay down some good consistent lap times and moved up to 9th place passing 11 competitors in the process.
