Random Updates and World Cup Preview:
Sorry it has taken me so long to update this. Things have been pretty busy this summer. The last time I posted an update was after Tremblant, so basically I have the month of June to sum up.
I started the first weekend off by hitting up the Auburn road race on the 3rd. I thought it would be a good idea to ride down, race the cat 5’s, vent to the officials how unfair and unethical their rules are and ride home. Turns out the race was more like 30 miles away, not 20. Made it to the start, 2 minutes before the start, with a check in hand and was denied a start spot in the 5’s. I tried bargaining my way up into a higher category and was denied. I went home after being told I couldn’t race. So after talking with Wheels Saturday night I decided to hit up the Cat 5 crit and with full vengence. Road down to the race made it in time to register, sat around and then unleashed a can of whoop ass. Well not really, only like a fraction of a can. After demolishing the cat 5’s I got my upgrade to cat 2!!! Yeah that’s right, I did the ultimate jump - 5 to 2! Maybe I can do some more road races…… Maybe.
I have also been spending countless hours looking up apartments in Southern Maine. After 4 years in Dickey-Wood I am moving out and getting an apartment. I will be living with my girlfriend, Hattie, teammate John Burns, and good friend JD. I think finally after looking at several places and getting denied several times I found a place in Yarmouth! Right off the highway, short drive without traffic to Portland, and the best part…. Less than 9 miles to Bradbury State Park! If we do get the place (cross your fingers) I am sure there will be a BBQ later in July/Aug. On top of the Apt I have been shopping for a mattress, finally got a good deal on one, or what I thought was a good deal. Still searching for some bedroom furniture. To fund this apartment, paper work for my first loan has been filled out and sent in. Also I am working on building up a resume and searching for a “real” job. To do this I have been meeting with a professor who has more business experience than anyone I personally know. This has just involved a lot of trips down to Portland. Hopefully I can get something, because funds are really low! So basically the first part of June have been filled with small, time consuming projects.
The 18th and 19th I spent sitting in a refrigerated lecture room for a two day sports nutrition symposium. The class was very educational to me in regards to my personal diet. After class on Tuesday I was able to fit in a decent hard ride to fine tune the legs before the world cup. After the ride Hattie took me out for dinner to celebrate my birthday. We had a great meal and it was nice to just do something low key with her. I am not one for big birthday bashes.
I left for Mount Sainte Anne Thursday morning. Of course I was late leaving my house, but still made it out at a reasonable time. I managed to dodge all the wildlife on the journey north, however my fellow drivers seemed to hit several deer, and countless small critters, all left on the side of the road for the crows. Now I wonder how all the small animals manage to get hit, yet you never see a damn crow dead in the road. So I made it to St. Anne around 3, but the directions to the condo were sketchy at best leaving me searching for a solid ½ hour. The condo was worth the long hunt. The price was decent and the accommodations are nice, minus the fact the wi-fi doesn’t work inside the condo. I managed to get a lap in on the course today. I went to go register and turns out registration closed at noon. I managed to talk my way into getting a team plate so I could get out on the course legally. Thankfully I have a charming voice and was able to do so. The course is very similar to last year, steep short climbs, short steep descents, false climbs, and rolling twisty tight single track. It should be a fun and super hard race! I am really thankful I have the opportunity to be here. Stay tuned for more updates.
