 Trek Across Maine
 | | click to enlarge | Well I am recuperated and back to reality after my 180-mile bike riding hiatus across the lovely state of Maine. Last weekend I was one of over 2,200 people that helped raise over $1.2 million and rode their bike from the mountains of Sunday River Ski Resort to the coastal town of Rockland for the American Lung Association of Maine (ALA-ME).
This was the first year that I have experienced phenomenal weather and able to display the team colors without freezing and being soaked! Three gorgeous sunny days on the bike, despite the headwinds. Funny, this was the year I was going to make this a social ride, ya know ride pace with a social group or something, just go out and tool along the rolling hills…well right off the bat, I realized my tooling pace does not match that of most of the riders on this trek. Luckily within the first 10 miles two guys (a big shout out to Jim and Rob) latched on and low and behold we were inseparable for the remainder of the journey across the state. We finished the weekend with an impressive high 18mph average despite to consistent headwind, passing other packs of riders, and navigating the cruddy condition of Maine’s chewed up back roads. I still had plenty of time to be social though, I just saved it all for the rest stops and evening socials…The ALA-ME puts on a great three day event – tons of food, lots of support, and raises money for a great cause. Next year I hope to get together a Bikeman team out on the course. What was the one thing I could not have lived without this past weekend? I would say Greyhound Juice anti-friction cream was the saving grace! Off to Biddeford Maine Sunday morning for a little mountain bike race action…
Happy riding ~
