Longsjo Classic Stage Race (Cat 4) Friday, June 29th, 2007 Stage 2 Circuit Race (6 laps – 19 Miles) Fitchburg, MA
The legs were feeling good when I woke up and I was excited for another day in beautiful Fitchburg! Today is the circuit race – 6 laps for a total of 19 miles – with some point sprinting thrown in to keep everyone honest. My goal today was to stay towards the front and finish with the main pack – trying to save the legs a bit for tomorrow.
Another great weather day – sunny and 70 – perfect. Cat 4’s rolled at 8:32. From the start the pace was brisk but I knew this thing was going to be over soon so I figured it was ok to ride a bit out of comfort range. The course started with a sharp left and then a sharp right followed by what turned into a recovery straight section of about a mile and then a sweeping right where the pelotin pushed the pace - cruising at 40+mph at points, finishing with a sharp right and a short steep hill – we did 6 laps.
The day unfolded exactly as I wanted it to – just finish with the main group and stay clear of crashes (which there were only 2 minor ones – not bad for Cat 4’s with this many tight turns). Most folks got the same time today so not much changing of placements in GC. It is lonely being to sole Bikeman.com rider in the event this year - I did see an AFD/Bikeman.com guy early on but I lost track of where he was.
I am looking forward to tomorrow’s road race. 44 miles on a beautiful challenging course. It will be nice not to have to break speed limits rushing back to work after racing for a change!
