2008 Kona Jake the Snake Cyclocross Frame:

Kona raises the bar yet again with the 2008 Jake the Snake. Kona was one of the first companies to produce a production level cyclocross bike back in 1998. The original Jake the Snake was a blue frame constructed of butted aluminum tubing and featured a steel fork on the front end. Well the blue paint is back but the 10th edition of the Jake the Snake is light years ahead of the original.

The Jake the Snake has undergone a few changes for 2008. For one, this year the Frame is offered as a Frame set with a Kona branded Carbon cyclocross fork. Now you are probably thinking, the price must have gone up. But if you can believe it the Price for the 2008 frame and fork is the same as last years frame only. How can this be...? Well Kona has gone away from using Easton tubing in the frame construction. Word on the street is that the tubing they are using, Kona Race Light 7005 Series Butted Aluminum, is made in the same factory as the Easton tubes and the butting is vitually identical. So it isn't Easton but....

This is a race ready cross frame and fork that features Kona's tried and true cyclocross geometry that has won several National Championships over the last 10 years. The new carbon fork features an aluminum steerer tube and cantilever brake studs only. For now the forks are not being offered as a stand alone product. The frame weighs in at a respectable 3.6lbs. Not the lightest frame in the world but I beleive it is one of the only one's in the world offered with a carbon fork for under $400.00.
