The Southern California State XC Series Final, seventh race of the 7 month campaign for points and the ever so elusive "Championship Jersey". I come to understand that the winner of this covet prize is by statute obligated to 'buy a round' for the other riders honored at the podium. More on that later. Fall has made it's apperarance in the southland. The drive into the mountains Sunday was highlited by crisp cool morning tempertures, the afternoon produced some high lofty clouds and the breeze made for the very best of riding conditions.

I arrived in time to prep not only myself but my near new Salsa Mamasita. I located the remote start with time to spare and rolled out with a four age group of twenty-five or so. Team Big Bear has an endless choice of access roads and trails to shape each race course. Sundays ride was noticeably different from the July event. Climbing, yes. Fast and lose descends, yes. A couple of flowing single tracks, sure. And that death-eater Super D trail, yep! Well, I managed to find the only three (3) inch nail on the mountain and practiced my tire/tube changing skills. Not bad I even took time to digitally record the fact. So I finished the race. I like to think it was a great ride. I made up only what I needed to finish Third.

Shortly after the Sunday XC race all those interested were to convene at La Montana Restaurant for free tacos and the chance of an obligatory brew. It becomes a long afternoon, both sunday race trophy and series awards stretched into the twilight. The team competition is spirited. The pro and semi's are inspirational. The rest of the crowd resist being pushed up a race class. I am happy the XC season is over. I'll take the 3rd and alway remember that nail.
