This little gem falls into the category of "Why didn't I know about this sooner?" The Tektro Long Drop Hanger has been on our online store for some time now, I know because I remember putting it there. Unfortunately it fell into obscurity becuase I didn't have a photo for it. Well now that I have fondled one and got a photo of it, I can tell you that if you have a cross bike this is a little beauty you should not be without.
Now a long drop cable hanger is not new to me, Interloc Racing Design (IRD) has produced their own long drop cable hanger for awhile now and they are fantastic. In fact I have one for each of my cross bikes. They allow a much smoother cable housing transition for the front brake. Smoother transition means less drag which means better modulation. In the end this translates to stronger, more consistent brake action.
The catch with the IRD long drop hanger however is that is a little pricey at $28.95. That is over $20 more than a plain Jane standard drop hanger. This probablly restricts the sales to mostly folks (like me) that absolutely need it becuase of stack height restrictions. The other snag is that right now the IRD hanger is out of stock. That definitely poses a problem right at the start of the cross season.
So it was very timely when I discovered that the Tektro Long Drop Hanger was functionally the same as the IRD Long Drop Hanger for less then half the cost. At $10.95 there isn't a good reason everyone shouldn't use one of these and save themselves that horrible thought of drilling a hole through their stem for better cable routing. It comes in 1" and 1 1/8" threadless versions or for an extra $2 you can get 1" and 1 1/8" threadless versions with a barrel adjuster included. For now, black only, but hey, this year black is the new black.
