Utah Cyclocross #6 Herber City, UT November 3rd, 2007
 | | Mamasita con Cross | Stop #6 on the Utah Cyclocross circuit was at 5500 feet of elevation in the mountain town of Heber City, Utah - Temperature at 9:00 AM, 23 degrees - All the regular fast guys were there. The top eight were called up and, for once, I was quick to fill in behind for a second row starting position.
Bang!
Off we go. The Heber City venue is a rodeo slash horse track slash fair ground. The surface, while somewhat soft looking, on this particular morning was frozen solid and choppy as all get-out. The group went out pretty hot and within just a minute or two I found myself sitting third wheel. Funny thing about the “C” group; with the newly formed 35+B group, all the geezers seemed to have moved there. Thus I am pretty much the old man of the “C” group.
Wise Old Man
Being the “Old Man”, I prefer to think of myself as the “Wise Old Man”… sounds better. For 90% of the race I just patiently sat on. Don’t get me wrong, at times I was not sure I could even do that, but I did try to conserve as much energy as I could. I sat third wheel for 35 minutes and by the final lap, there were three of us well out in front of the field. It was quickly apparent that the winner was to be one of us three.
Drilling it
 | | click to enlarge | With half a lap to go, I picked my spot and drilled it. Two laps earlier I started scoping out a spot and a line for my attack. For once, my execution was spot on. I gapped the other two by about 10 seconds and held it to the finish. Yay me!
Gear
Once again my setup was awesome. The Mamasita a la Cross did the trick. It’s not a cross bike per se, but it’s about as close as you can get. This whole Cross thing is a blast!
