Thomson Day

On January 19, 2008, my family and I went to Thomson Day, which was going to be a birthday event for Ronnie Thomson (owner of LH Thomson). However, sadly, he died the Wednesday before the festival. So, instead a memorial was held in his honor. My family co-directs the Georgia Cyclocross Series and the Thomson company has always been very generous in their sponsorship and volunteering for our series.

The main event was the 420 race, which was named after a Sweetwater beer and went on for four hours and twenty minutes. The interesting thing was that it was held in 35 degree temperatures with freezing rain! The trail was fast and fun. It was mostly flat with some short hills and a lot of roots. I ended up riding four laps for a total of two and a half to three hours of base riding. It was kind of cool to watch the puddles and creek crossings grow larger every lap, but by the second lap my back brake was gone and by the fourth lap my front brake was also history. I don’t think anyone had brakes by the end!

The atmosphere was different than most races, because it had fewer people and I got to see one of Trev’s (bam-bam) new creations. He had a new double decker bike, which is a tall bike composed of two bikes, welded on top of one another. This one was pink and purple. There were also pixie bikes, which were pink and purple kid’s bikes with sixteen inch wheels and custom, super-tall, seat posts. This way, a normal person can ride it without feeling scrunched. I think there were four of those.
