 Dawn til Dusk 12 Hour Gallup,NM April 12, 2008
Got in the car mid-day Friday and started the long haul down to Gallup, New Mexico. A buddy and I were heading to the Dawn to Dusk 12 hour race, and were hoping for sun and sinewy singletrack. Instead, we were met by snow, wind, and cloudy skies for about 3hrs of the drive until we hit Santa Fe and things started to clear up.
After driving for 8hrs we hit the hotel and fell asleep hard. A quick nap is what it felt like before we were up and roaring. The race started at 7am and was going until, you guessed it, 7pm.
It started cold, and I felt pretty slow for the first couple laps. The sky warmed and so did the legs and the next few laps breezed by. I caught the leader on the 6th lap of the 13mile all-singletrack course and rode with him for a lap. He dropped me in the pits but I reeled him back in and was able to drop him on that lap and stay away for the rest of the race.
It was awesome to start out the season with a win in the overall solo category, and my buddy Zac came in third for our age group. A great trip and lots of singletrack racing will hopefully just be a precedent for the rest of the season!
