 | | click to enlarge | Ok, first off, this is my first MTB race in over 6 years, and my first non-downhill race in over 8, so getting back into the XC racing was kinda cool. I saw a bunch of guys from cross there so it was good to get back in the community. As I posted in my previous entry, I had ridden the Tour de Cure and laid 2 tons of sod the day before, so I wasn’t expecting much. Originally I was going to ride the Sport Singlespeed category, but due to further sod laying I registered for the Beginner 35+ men, but still on the singlespeed. Again, the weather was hot ~80 by start time and the course was pretty flat and technical…the way I like it.
I got a relatively slow start ~10th going into the first singletrack section, but throughout the race moved up one by one. The course was 2 – 6 mile loops, mostly singletrack, but with a few ¼ mile hills thrown in for good measure (sure wish I would’ve had my cross bike)! On the second lap I sat in ~6th place, and only ended up passing one on the next lap, so I ended up 5th out of 17…not bad for a first race. Oh yeah, I was the only singlespeed racer (36x16 baby!!!). I gotta give props to Slick Willy as always, my chain worked phenomenal and was clean throughout the dusty ride, where would we be w/out this product!
Also want to say congrats to Ian on a nice first bike race….here’s to many more! Cheers! Until next time!
