6th Annual Hammerfest at the Hollow ICUP #5 Midway, UT May 17th, 2008
 | | click to enlarge | The Intermountain Cup made its annual stop at the 2002 Olympic X-Country Skiing venue, Soldier Hollow in Midway, Utah. There is also a mid-week series that switches between Sundance Ski resort and Soldier Hollow, so I went to the Wednesday night race to scout the course and rev up the legs.
The Wednesday night course followed the same course the Intermountain Cup series would take, but I would only be doing one lap instead of 3. All the experts lined up together and it was a fast enough start that I’m sure everyone remembered that we only had to do one lap. I was able to make some progress once the race settled in and finished in 7th place out of 23 Expert finishers. It felt like a good preview for the big race on Saturday. I even won a gift certificate to a fancy restaurant in town. Taking a nice hot dinner home to the wife helps smooth over the fact that I’m making my first appearance at home that day around 9:30 p.m, after the kids were in bed.
Results for the Wednesday night series.
Saturday morning the race had a tough time getting started as they were winding up the kids/beginner races, so I ended up doing multiple warm-ups before hearing the call to the starting line. Right at the start the series points leader took off the front. He had done the same thing on Wednesday and I had caught him on the first long doubletrack climb and finished a few places ahead of him, so I was hoping for a repeat. Well, he managed to stay off the front and win it. I felt pretty good and ended up going back and forth with a few other racers in my group as we gradually moved up through the course. This one got pretty tough near the end, but I was able to make some good progress on the last lap even though my lap time wasn’t showing a lot of consistency. I guess I wasn’t the only one suffering. I ended up finishing in a seemingly consistent 7th place. My first lap even ended up being about ½ minute faster than my Wednesday night race lap, so I guess I can count that as progress.
