If you ever find yourself in Southern Maine looking for your single track fix then you have to make your way to Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal. Originally aquired from the federal government in 1939, Bradbury Mountain is one of the 5 original state parks. Thanks to generous donations of land, funds and time it has expanded to several hundred acres.
The really great news for dirt loving bikers is that they are mountain bike friendly. They are pro-active in creating and maintining multi-use trails. Many individuals and groups have come together to help in this effort and as a result some of the best mountain biking in the state is right here. They have recently linked up to newly aquired neighboring Tryon Mountain which expands the single track an additional 3 miles with potential for much more. This all adds up so you can ride for 3-4 hours off road without ever hitting the same trail twice.
They charge a nominal fee, currently less than $5 per person, which is a bargain for use of the trails alone and a downright steal when you add in the included parking, bathroom facilities AND bike wash. There is also camping available in the park if you are coming from away and want to make a weekend of it. If tenting it isn't your thing or you want to get your shopping or eat on, Freeport is only 10 minutes away. If you you want to get in the classic Maine sea shore experience, Reid and Popham Beach State Parks are nearby. If all of that is still not enough juice for you, Bikeman.com headquarters and retail shop is only about 30 minutes away. Whether you need some gear or just want to check out the eclectic home of Bikeman it is worth your time to make the extra drive. I can guarantee you will probablly see something that you didn't expect. Just don't come on Sundays cause we're out ridin'. The Bradbury Mountain website has all the info you need to plan your day trip or weekend adventure. The website has some great PDF maps of the East Side and West Side trails or as the locals call 'em the Campground Side and the Mountain Side respectively.
As the name implies the Mountain Side traverses Bradbury Mountain proper and as you would imagine it has a fair amount of up and down. Trails on this side have been around the longest so they are typically wider and rootier than what you will find on the Campground Side. Don't let that shy you away though, these are definitely some fun trails. Keep your eye out for people on foot however. The Mountain Side sees a large number of day hikers making their way to the top for scenic views so please be courteous and share the trail. Horseback riding is allowed in the park as well so on occasion you may come across an equine on the trail. Definitely give these beasts the respect and space they deserve.
The Campground Side is where you will find some real gems of single track. Many of these trails are new within the last 5-10 years and were built specifially with mountain biking in mind. You have your pick of tight twisties, wide open blaster flats and some of the sweetest flow sections you will find anywhere. Due to the trails being more spread out (and no mountain top views), the Campgrond Side sees way less foot traffic than the Mountain Side. This means you can cut loose and let it roll a fair amount faster with less chance of plowing over a family out for a hike. Keep your eyes open though, another biker might be enjoying the flow just as much as you but in the opposite direction. Team Bikeman.com riders John Burns and Mike Joos took a video camera along with them to tape a couple of the premier sections of single track on the Campground Side, Ragan and Lanzo. Sit back, enjoy the ride and start planning your visit.
