Team Rider: Art DeGraw
Art Degraw: Mountain Bike, Road, Multisport

2009 RACING AGE: 29

RESIDENCE: Hemingway, SC

WHERE I GO MONDAY MORNING: Who knows? Every Monday is different! To do research? To swim?...

RACING DISCIPLINE(S) AND CATEGORY(S): Pro Mountain Bike, Triathlon, Duathlon, (CAT 4 Road).

# OF YEARS RACING: a few, here and there

# OF BIKES OWNED: Currently about 4 that are together.

FAVORITE BIKE: On the dirt it has to be my smooth riding ‘07 Salsa El Santo - rides like a Caddy and handles like a Porsche. On pavement I have found nothing that has compared to my Serotta Legend (although I believe I’m biased).

FAVORITE TRAIL OR RIDE: I don’t really have a favorite anymore. Anything that gets me on 2 wheels is great - flats are fast, climbs are better, but I‘ll take anything I can get. Of course a great flowing, east coast, single-track has no rival in my book. Riding with my wife anywhere we may be living at the time, or with my dad since he always hits every hill so hard, are both favorite times on the bike.

NON-CYCLING INTERESTS/HOBBIES: harassing my wife and crazy Beagles, swimming, running, mathematics.

PERSONAL NOTES & QUOTES: "This past year was a bit crazy. A stomach problem and a broken chain at the duathlon nationals still gave me an age group title in the off-road race and the next day I raced well enough to receive a roll down for the on-road world championships in Italy. At my second ever triathlon I did a 3rd overall and qualified for the Xterra nationals in Lake Tahoe. I physically left grad school at the University at Albany to finish my research in absentia. My wife accepted a teaching job in Lake City, South Carolina - so we moved to Hemingway, SC from upstate NY. Great weather, great people here in SC. Desma (my wife - and former Bikeman.com team rider) is motivating me to finish my doctorate in math and teach high school as well as trying to kill me with a surprise second beagle (if you have one you understand). A breast cancer diagnosis has sent us into a whirlwind of doctor appointments and tests. Des will be going through chemotherapy until early summer, so we will get to spend a lot of time together as she recovers. I’m looking forward to this year -

Time with my wife
and beagles (and Kobe),
South Carolina “winter” riding,
Becoming a teacher again,
Finishing my doctorate,
Early season racing in the Southeast
mid-summer racing in the Northeast,
Xterras, 70.3’s, World duathlons, Norba NMBS, another half marathon,
A cross country trip with the bikes on the rack and maybe a couple in the trunk,
A tattoo,
And... cancer free.
