SE canti brake
written by Todd Holland, January 25, 2009
That's a Scott/Pedersen SE (self energizing) cantilever brake. Neon for extra cool, low profile for extra clearance. There was a helical screw gizmo in that big barrel and a stack of wave washers. As the brake pads contacted the rim, braking force would push the arms further up the helix, a positive feedback loop for extra power.

Well that was the theory anyway. The reality was extra squeal. I had these on our tandem and they howled mercilessly. Very difficult to set up, I never found that extra power. But our riding buddies always knew when the tandem hit the binders. And so did every dog in a 3-mile radius.

It's one side of a Scott Pederson self energizing canti brake, minus hardware.

They worked great when the spiral insert was clean, but they got gummed up pretty easy.

Has nobody commented yet? That's a Scott-Pederson Self Energizing brake. Sometimes marketed as Suntour. Popular on the backs of mountain bikes and on tandems. Pain in the ass to adjust.
