Wimmer’s XC Race at Sherwood Hills
Intermountain Cup Series #4
Logan, UT
May 19th, 2009

ImageIt’s been a few years since I had raced Sherwood Hills, probably due to the course. I remembered a lot of long flat dusty washboards. This race used to be later in the year, so instead of dust, I was picturing mud since I was hearing that other racers were shoveling snow off the course days before the race.

I misjudged how long it would take me to get to the venue and had almost no time to set-up and warm-up. Once we got started, the pace was pretty fast, and as the group settled in I was still feeling good, so I went off the front. Since I hadn’t pre-ridden the course, I did miss one severe turn and found myself losing a place, but soon gained it back.

Almost as surprising as finding myself in the lead was how fun the course was. It was fast, tacky and with lots of new single-track. I soon got passed by one of the fastest guys in my group and I spent the 2nd lap trying to keep him in sight. I was able to make up some time on him during the flats, but would lose him on the climbs.

I felt good, was racing well and hung on for 2nd place. The course was fun enough that next year I might even go up for a pre-ride.

Check out Intermountain Cup for the full results.
