 My Interview with Dave Zabriskie
So I was recently able ask professional road racer Dave Zabriskie a few questions and he was nice enough to answer them. Here they are:
(Sean Daley) You recently started Yeild 2 Life. How has that been going for you?
(Dave Zabriskie) Yield to Life is going really well thanks to all of our incredible supporters helping us spread the word and get our message out. It's pretty exciting to see this attitude change start to take hold -- this idea that cyclists are not "nuisances" or "inconveniences" you have to hurry and get around, but rather LIFE deserving of little more time, a little more space, and a lot more respect.
(SD) I noticed you didn’t mention Ipods on your safety tips. Do you ride with one?
(DZ) I do ride with an Ipod, but at a very low volume and I leave the left ear piece out - it's really not safe, or legal, or recommended, but when I'm riding 7 hours a day it really helps...
(SD) Do you plan on riding in the Tour this year?
(DZ) Yes, first I'm doing the Giro though.
(SD) You don’t train with a coach, why not?
(DZ) I get some advice here and there but I prefer to do it my way most of the time.
(SD) Can you tell us a bit about your training?
(DZ) I train a lot in the winter...then the racing starts and the training decreases.
(SD) How many hours do you think you log each year
(DZ) I'd say at least a 1000 hours.
(SD) How much do you mountain bike?
(DZ) In Octobter through November I'd say that's about all I do...I don't get out to much during the season.
(SD) You started your own line of chamois cream—Dznuts. How did that come about?
(DZ) Yes DZ-Nuts is my own special blend of ingredients that I have come up with over the years...right now we supply Team Columbia and my own team, Team Garmin
(SD) Using chamois cream helps on the bike, but many of us have to do more to take care of our “perennial area.” Do you have any tips on off the bike care?
(DZ) Keep it clean.
(SD) Do you every have problems with other riders not getting you humor?
(DZ) I've never had any problems.
(SD) Are you still walking the mall to get used to people?
(DZ) I haven't been in a mall for while...
(SD) Do you have plans for after cycling?
(DZ) No real plans...a lot of dreams...
(SD) What kind of comics do you like?
(DZ) I grew up a real Batman fan...I also enjoy the Marvel stuff -- they have so many characters I don't think they will ever run out of movies for Hollywood...
(SD) How did the 2005 Tour de France change your life?
(DZ) I don't think it changed it that much...I recently discovered what caused my crash, which has been a good feeling -- sorry I can't disclose the cause.
(SD) Who inspires you in cycling?
(DZ) The UCI...
(SD) Favorite movie?
(DZ) The Big Lebowski
(SD) Favorite album?
(DZ) Constantly changing but for the moment I'll say Moontan by Golden Earing.
(SD) What would you want be if you weren’t a professional cyclist?
(DZ) Video game tester
(SD) Favorite quote?
(DZ) "You really only here two days, the day you come in and the day you go out" (avon barksdale)
(SD) Thanks a lot Dave!
