California Rim Nordic Super D Team Big Bear Southern California State Series Finals June 27, 2009
Summer finally has hit the Southern California Mountains. What a perfect time to try a Super D Race in a beautiful mountain setting. I had missed the previous year’s Super D Races put on by Team Big Bear. This was the final one in the series for Team Big Bear, who ran several all over the Southern California area this spring. From what I heard, I rode the best of all of them.
I have never ridden any of the trails at Rim Nordic, which is a X-Country Ski area in the winter, with groomed trails. When I went to practice I could not find the start of the race, which was 1 mile east, up hill on Hwy 38. The people putting on the race had already been so nice, sending me maps and info on the race. They offered to drive me up to the start for practice; a good thing because it was not marked and I would have never found it.
The info on the Super D said it was 3 miles; with a start uphill, some downhill and then a flat peddle to the finish. I could handle that. It was more like 4 miles with a mix of up and down hill, starting at around 7200 feet and up. I wasn’t used to the high altitude, but really liked the single track. One of our team members, Russ, had told me how much he liked the course, which is what really spurred me on to try it. I didn’t realize until today that he and Roger did the X-Country race the next day, after we all left the trails loose and rutted for them the day before.
On race day I wanted to practice the run again, but this time I had to ride up the highway to get to the start. I think the nerves of wondering if some tour bus or Chevy truck pulling a boat would kick me off the narrow shoulder did nothing for the muscles. I was determined to find someone to shuttle back up with for the race itself.
Everyone attending the race seemed as friendly as those putting it on. I brought my team cheerleaders/pups, Wile E. and Joey, who also wanted to make friends with all the bikers and families. So I did manage to find a ride to the top. Only three other women were racing that day, and so we quickly made friends. I was definitely the oldest yet the newest to the group, most who live up there in the Big Bear area. The men knew we were tough. But we were ready to have fun.
And I really did. My bike worked like a charm, never failing me, as I pumped up the hills and sailed down the rest. Thanks to my Shimano XT shifters and brakes. I knew I had only my inner drive making me go, as all in my group passed me by early on. It was a dusty, rutted yet fun course. As I crossed the finish line, everyone was still gathered around, cheering me on. What a thrill. It was so good to hear I did well from total strangers, even though I was most likely the last to cross the finish line.
So now for the best part; I won 1st in my category, which was broken down only by age. How cool was that. And since no one else in my age category did any of the other series races, I ended up getting 1st place for the Southern California Series Super D as well. Two firsts in one day; and my cheerleaders jumped onto the podium with me, as I wore the gold the first time, and wore the Series Jersey the second time. I made sure they announced my sponsor Bikeman.com, as most were Big Bear local teams.
Because of the riders supporting the Rim Nordic course, the people running Rim Nordic have definitely decided to continue their first Super D Series, all using the same course as this race. I’m thrilled and plan to attend as many as I can. Thank you Bikeman.com. I was proud to wear your jersey, and I’m sure the next time it will get noticed more.
