ImageDo you believe in biorhythms? I’m not sure I do, but sometimes it’s tough to explain why things go poorly. Usually, I blame swamp cats for the unexplainable, but being up on an arid mountainside in Utah, this is not a plausible explanation. Biorhythms are the day-to-day ups and downs individuals experience in their physical, emotional and intellectual states. I remember childhood days playing Nerf football where I would catch anything that was thrown in my general direction with spectacular flair. Other days, I was pitiful. ImageFlash forward thirty years and the same unexplainable ups and downs appear in my races. Last week, I felt like everything went as though I had written a script and everyone faithfully played their part. This week was a struggle from the gun. In my defense, I have a poor history on this course so I should not have expected too much. Still, I talked myself into thinking it worked to my advantage because there is some longish climbing involved, but I was just kidding myself.

ImageThe course was pretty much the same as last year with some extra twists and turns added. The group strung out early in the first lap and I settled into about fifth place. Through four races the front group has been made up of the same six riders more or less. Fortunately, I was still in the front group even though I was not feeling my best. I drifted about 30 seconds off the two leaders with one other rider and two in between. The rest of the race was unremarkable and nothing much changed until the final lap. Somehow, I dropped my chain going through the last barrier section and wasted the full minute lead I had over the next rider back while fumbling with the chain. I tried to catch him on the long paved climb to the finish line only to come up short. I gave everything I had so I have to be satisfied with seventh place.

ImageBy the way, my biorhythms were down all weekend averaging about 37%. Clearly, this is not any more reliable than my swamp cat explanation, but I don’t plan to check my biorhythms before next weekend because I sure don’t need to be mind f’d by that ahead of time. There’s plenty of real stuff to worry about. Snow is in the forecast for the double weekend at Wheeler farm. Halloween Cross!!
