Turtle Pond Circuit Race, Cat 3/4

Waking up at 5am is not my idea of a fun Saturday morning. The early start times are by far my least favorite thing about road racing. After forcing down some coffee, a bagel, banana, and a bowl of oatmeal I was out the door heading north for Concord, NH.
When I arrived at my destination the weather resembled an October New England cross race. With temps in the 30’s leg warmers and long sleeves were a most. During my pre race socializing I realized I had 30 mins before my start. So I quickly pinned my number, jumped on my Salsa CAMPEON™ and rolled to the start line with 7 minutes to spare.
I met up with two fellow Bikeman.com riders hanging out in the back of the 3/4 field. Steve and some other guy who I didn’t catch his name before we started. Steve informed me he already had a mechanical. His D/A 10 rear shifter would not shift to the three largest cogs in the back.
With 53 miles ahead of us on an 11.4 mile circuit the pace started rather comfortable. On each lap there was a 1.5K finishing climb. I used the first two laps to warm up. The next lap I decided to move up towards the front, I stopped right around 20 wheels. With 3 laps done and 2 to go the accelerations that were made on the climb started to hurt. On the last lap the pace picked up with multiple attacks trying to get away before the final climb. Coming into the final turn I was about 20th. This is really where the race started. A few riders on the front started to blow up. Picking them off one by one, I moved up the field as I heard a voice over my right shoulder. “On your right” I recognized the voice of Steve “LT” Morse. As soon as he came around I grabbed his wheel. It instantly felt like I was drafting behind a UPS truck. It was great!! We finished up 13th and 14th. And 3rd and 4th for Cat 4 riders. Overall a pretty good day for Bikeman.com.
