On Friday morning Beau (my coach) woke me up by calling me shortly after 8am to see if I could help him take ten 13 year olds out mountain biking for a couple hours in the morning. I thought this could be a lot of fun riding with some young guns so I quickly packed up my bags and headed down to North Berwick. Beau had all the kids ready to go by the time I made the drive down. Let’s just say 13 year old boys are not the most patient kids so I quickly got dressed and was ready to go.
Beau and I explained safety rules of riding on trails and what not to the kids since for most of them this was there first time actually going mountain biking. After riding with these hyperactive 13 year olds it kind of made me wish I was 13 again. These kids have no fear and will rip down any downhill! At every hill I had another kid trying to race me to the crest and I am not going to lie some of them are pretty darn fast!
By the time we finished the ride I think I finally wore most of them out! In total I think we only road for 10-12 miles. Hopefully they all were tired and went to bed early that night. (Parents no need to thank me, the pleasure is all mine) I had a great time riding with the kids. When we finished the ride they were asking me for autographs etc… Unfortunately the young guns had a train to catch for a birthday party so I quickly handed out a bunch of BIKEMAN.COM stickers, which they all loved. Sometime soon I am going to have to take them out again and maybe do a small autograph session. Riding with those young kids really made me enjoy my job. Hopefully I influenced most or some of them to ride there bike more and enjoy mountain biking.
Saturday was a different story. After the fun mountain bike ride I drove up north to visit with the rents. On Friday night I was able to also see some old friends from high school that were home for the holiday weekend, which was nice. On Saturday I got up early and headed out for a nice 4-hour road ride filled with intervals. About 20 minutes into the ride the clouds opened up and the rain started to come down. I think Friday’s ride was maybe too much because I was dead. I couldn’t get going at all, so I called it quits after 3 hours and went home and took a very nice long nap! Around 4 in the afternoon the rain let up so my old man and I decided to go skeet shooting. Now my old man claims he has been going once a week and if that’s the case then he really isn’t coming along with his shooting after what I saw. Now I am not saying I am ready for the Olympics in skeet shooting, but I did a hell of a lot better then he did!
Sunday was the usual ritual for Easter Sunday, go to church then go out for brunch. After loading up on food my legs were calling for another nap on the coach. And that’s how my Sunday was spent, relaxing and spending time with the family. All and all a great weekend spent at home. Now I just need to make it through this week at school, 2 exams and a handful of meetings, etc…
