Its back to “the real world” after spending an entire summer riding my bike and laying in the sun. Somehow I managed to go the entire summer with out working a single day! However, the good life of riding a bike and not having anything else on your plate is over. Unfortunately I am not making money at racing my bike yet so I have to start working again.
When I got back from New Zealand my good friend Hattie picked me up at the Portland airport and drove me back to school. After the 15 minute drive back to campus I was put right to work for resident assistant (RA) training. Luckily for me the dates of the world championships conflicted with RA training. I was able to miss the first 10 days of training. Most of you are thinking “10 days of RA training, wow that’s a long time.” Well RA training is actually more like two + weeks, and two weeks of going from 8 am till 10 pm without breaks. This was a rude awakening for me. After almost two weeks in New Zealand being treated like royalty and then going to RA training while trying to recover from 16 hour jet lag was no fun.
After surviving RA training it was time to deal with the stupid freshmen who go on a freedom trip. You know the ones who get to drunk because they don’t know how much liquor their body can handle and end up making a complete fool of themselves like passing out in the common area and then loosing control of there bodily fluids. Yeah those are the stupid freshmen I had to deal with for the first couple of weeks while they get their freedom trip out of their system while earning and making a reputation for themselves. Even though the RA job really sucks it does have some perks besides the free room and board.
Classes have been going well. I am taking all business and finance classes as I work towards my major in Marketing, I think. I am still completely lost on what I want to do after graduating. Well, I would really like to be able to make a living at riding my bike, but if that doesn’t happen, then I am pretty much screwed after college. Besides the occasional worrying about what comes after college I have been able to get out and do a bunch of fun mountain bike rides up at Bradbury State Park. I found some back roads to the park which cuts about 15 to 30 minutes off the drive time making it a quick 30 minute drive. Bradbury probably has some of the best single track in the State of Maine and I love to go and rip it up for a couple of hours!
The weather in September has been pretty nice and I have been able to sneak in some long fun road rides out on the Maine countryside as the fall foliage starts to appear. I was pretty worn out from traveling and racing all summer so I decided I would take a couple weekends off from racing while I recoup before a season of cross racing.
The other thing that is a different is that I have started working again. I work part time during the school year at a land surveying and civil engineering company in Westbrook called SGC. I have been working there for a couple years now and I plan on continuing working there throughout this school year. I primarily do land surveying for SGC, but I have been getting my feet wet with AutoCAD this year. AutoCAD is a very complex computer system that I don’t believe is all that great for my overall health.
Well its time to hit the books again. Mid terms are right around the corner. Before I know it I will be studying away and cramming for finals. It’s funny how every year you look back and wonder where the time went. It seems that there is never a slow or long year, only long days and long classes! Take care.
