Northeast Ohio Crankfest OMBC Race Series #9 West Branch State Park, Ravenna, OH
The weekend forecast was not looking good. There was rain predicted for Saturday with partial clearing predicted for Sunday. When I pre-rode on Saturday the course was surprisingly dry considering how much rain we had had recently. On Sunday I checked out the start which takes you thru a field for a mile or so, it was very wet and sloppy but the rest of the course was pretty dry.
The only thing you needed to do was watch out for the corners. The last few races I have been finishing in second place pretty consistently, this time however I was going to try a different tactic. The guy that has been winning won the series in the younger age group 3 times and has won my age group 2 times and is on his way to a third. So my new plan was to get on his wheel and go with him when he decided to take off. In the prior races this guy had been putting 3 to 4 minutes into me in every race. I was determined not to let that happen again. When the race started I got right on his wheel, I settled in and was feeling ok when I made a bonehead move. When we cam up to a log we had to get over I was being lazy and didn’t pull my front wheel off the ground far enough. My front wheel hit the log and I flew over the bars. I was right back up but it cost me some time that I could never get back. At the end this guy only beat me by about 1.5 minutes which was better than previous races. I am looking forward to the next race, I will keep training and eventually I will beat him. I just need to be patient.
Later,
Yale
