Big Bear Fall Classic Big Bear, CA
Matt Stevens and I took the wives up to Big Bear for a weekend of riding, Octoberfest and altitude adjustment. The weekend started with a fun ride out the back of Mark's Cabin (thanks again Tex). Matt and I set off with some clue of where we were going but managed to get a little lost anyways but along the way found some great single track. That night was filled with a crazy night of bratwurst and lederhosen at Octoberfest. The night ended with a drunken idiot throwing a parking sign through the conference center window, we decided this was the time to make an exit before things erupted.
Race day was a bit chilly with a night time temp that got down to 29 degrees. That was pretty cold considering we are in sunny California. Matt and I started in a big field of all sport men. The 20 mile course was a true challenge on single speeds with a cornucopia of terrain including an uphill 3 foot deep water crossing that sent a chill to the feet and a 2 mile long rock garden that was too scary to fall on.
The race leaders in our class (sandbaggers) took off at a speed that would not be matched by anyone. The leader fished 3:30 minutes ahead of 2nd place and the field was pretty divided. Matt and I kept in contact with each other along the course. Matt took a hard fought 6th place and I claimed 7th 4 minutes behind him. All in all in it was a great weekend.
