Team Race Reports
California State Finals & AMBC Series
Lake Castaic, CA

ImageWell it is the end of the California State Series, off to Lake Castaic for the last race. Maybe not the last race of the year, there are a couple looming on the horizon. I do not like the Castaic race. Too much uppie not enough downie. This means a lot of climbing and the downhill does not make up for it.
ImageI am not alone in my distain for this course. It is a 7 mile loop with 1500’ of climbing. Lots and lots of hills up, down, up, down and so on. Two miserable laps. And to top things off, not one other teammate would come to race the hell that it is. Andy would have come but he tried to kill a five year old kid with his bike and in the process almost broke his arm. The kid is ok. I guess the youngster ran in front of Andy. The best part of the day was Vikki and her folks came out for moral support and picture taking.

ImageI was in 4th for the California State Series in Single-speed Sport Men and Matt was 5th and Andy 6th. I was hoping that 1, 2 or 3 did not show so maybe I could move up a place or two. But nooooo, all showed up plus a couple more. Great. Oh well. The race started and then it ended without incident. I finished in just under 2 hours. I was pleased with the time. I think it took me around an hour more last year. Just goes to show you what a little training and weight loss can do.

ImageThe end result was I ended up 4th in the series, Matt got 5th, and Andy got 6th. Hell I could’a stayed home and got fourth. We stayed for awards for hours. The Sport Single-speed class # is 99. I thought it was a cool number until I realized that they give out awards based on class number. Dead last. Kind’a like some of my races. We got our award right after 10-12 female junior Olympic hopefuls. Someone has got to be last I guess.

ImageAll in all it was a great time over the course of the year. I did 4 of the 10 races in the series and got 4th out of 16. I will do better next time. Team Bikeman will do better. We should’a done more races, they counted 6 of 10 so we all could have done better in the series. It was nice for Vikki, her dad and mom to come to the race and wait around so long. They are troopers. The Surly 1x1, Rock Shox Reba, my spiffy new Lazer Genesis helmet (Al, I am still trying to get used to no visor in sunny CA) and the Panaracer Fire XC’s all worked great. Thanks to Bikeman for all the support. Thanks Big Al.

Tex
