2006 Iceman Cometh Challenge Kalkaska, MI to Traverse City, MI
This is a new race for me. The description I had been given was that it was a road race on dirt with sand pits at the bottom of the hills. The people that told me about the course couldn’t have been more right.
There were 93 people in my starting group so I got a good starting spot right on the front. When we started I was in the middle of a group of approximately 15 people. They started off at a blistering pace; one I was sure that could not be sustained by many for too long. After about ¼ of a mile we were off the front on our own. After about 5 miles I was starting to suffer pretty bad so I backed off some and let the pack go hoping that when people got tired I would catch them but that is where the trouble started. We were around the 12 mile point when I flatted. I knew them my race was over; there was know way I would be able to catch back on. I changed the tire and started riding again, since I knew I would never catch back on again I rode my own pace and tried to enjoy the ride until it happened again, another flat. This time is happened just after a feed zone at about mile 22. The funny thing is what caused my tire to go flat, an earring; what are the odds of that happening. Oh well, my race was over for sure now. Not the best way to end the season, there is always next year.
Later,
Yale
