Research Triangle Park, N.C. October 25, 2006 Bayer Environmental Science, along with the National Pest Management Association , is proud to announce the finalists and winner of the second Bayer Environmental Science "Young Scientist of the Year" contest. A panel of university and industry professionals determined the final awards.
The "Young Scientist of the Year" is Eric S. Paysen, from Clemson University, whose research focuses on the study of ants in urban environments. Mr. Paysen will receive a $2,500 scholarship and a $10,000 grant to further support his research.
Eric is a Ph.D. graduate student in the Clemson University Urban Entomology Program. On October 25, Bayer provided Eric with an all expense paid trip to the Annual National Pest Management Association Convention in Texas. He was recognized at the opening session of the five-day convention in front of thousands of professionals from across the country for his outstanding graduate work. Eric started in the Urban Entomology Program at Clemson as a research technician for his major advisor Dr. Patricia Zungoli. Over time, he began work on a Ph.D., while continuing his technical responsibilities. His research is an intensive study of the ecology and population dynamics of ant communities in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He is also studying ant communities in urban areas in South Carolina. During his research he has compiled a sizable reference ant collection and is generating important information for the National Park Service and South Carolina. Eric coordinates most of the Clemson Urban Entomology Lab field research projects on ants and termites. In the last few years, he has become a true expert on ant identification and biology. With his in-depth knowledge, Eric has been invited as a guest lecturer and seminar speaker in Clemson entomology classes, workshops for pest management professionals and scientific conferences across the U.S.
"We are very excited to continue the success of the first 'Young Scientist of the Year' contest," said Peter Farno, Director of Marketing, PPM, at Bayer Environmental Science. "To be able to financially support outstanding research that benefits our industry while strengthening our relationships with future researchers is a win-win-win situation; for the students, Bayer and the entire industry."
