BRC / Slick Willy Cyclocross Lowell, MA
After traveling to Brockton, MA last week and racing in the rain, in what would be considered a total MUD FEST, it was nice to be back racing on dry ground again. Yes, believe it or not, even after the 3 + " of rain we received the week prior, this course was relatively dry. The organizer did a very good job of putting together a very fast but technical course. It was a spectator friendly course, much like Gloucester, MA.
The race started by going around a dirt track, dismount so you could run up three steps, remount and ride a concrete sidewalk that dumped you on a slight of camber hill. You made a right hand turn, down the same hill onto a piece of tar before you dumped out onto a flat piece of lawn. Then with a left hand turn, transverse back across the lawn to make a right hand turn to go back across the lawn where you ended at the base of a steep climb. I decide my best plan was to run it. Once at the top of the hill you rode a ways before coming into the chicanes. Back down the hill, across the ball field and into a double track through the woods that brought you to the other side of the park Where there was a short hill with a 90 degree corner around a tree (which is where I rolled my front tubular and hit the ground during the second lap). This proceeded toward double barriers which brought you to the start of the lap again.
In the Masters 35-45+, there was some where around 70 riders on the line, I ended up 13 in my age group which is 45+. This is a race I would highly recommend. Well organized, technical course and spectator friendly.
