Loco X Cross Race, Leesburg, VA

Well, this was a chilly one. The masters start was at 10AM and the mercury was showing a nippy 25 degrees. I know, I know, for all of you in Maine hearing 25 degrees...well, that's beach weather, but down here in the Mid-Atlantic region this is pretty dang cold.
The course was a fairly non-technical loop that consisted of 75% fields and a short loop through the woods. But the frozen ground made for a crunchy slog. I've never described a course as crunchy before...but this frozen mess was the best way to describe it.
Instead of the usual masters field of 80-100 riders, I towed the line with 8 starters. At least I would be getting 8th place which sounds a lot better then my usual 80th or so place I was ending up with in the fall. Actually I was hoping to go a bit better then my uneventful fall campaign as I have been able to put in some long training miles with the unseasonable warm weather we've had here.
The weight has started to come off and I've been handing out some pain to my local group road ride lately...so there was hope I could do something here. And it certainly looked that way on the first two laps as I was able to hang with my nemesis from the fall campaign, Sol Schott. However, it didn't take long for the lactic acid to creep into the picture and the cold to affect the lungs. Yes, 8th place it was. I have known for awhile that my diesel engine of a body will probably never be suited to podium performances in Cross, but I don't care because it so much fun.
