As Big Al noted in one of his emails, “It is July 1st, time to start thinking cross!” My brain says yes, but the thermometer out on the field screaming 90 says no. Anyway, 25 minutes from home, Pawling Cycle and Sport organized the 1st annual midweek CX training series. This is supposed to be a low key training race... Time for fun.
Cross for me is a family event, my wife races, my daughter races, and I race. We pack up the car and even put a warmup trainer in the car... Right, low key. We show up and I see 2 USAC officials and ehh... electronic timing by Eastern Sports Promotions! The first official say, “Yes this is for points!” Points in July?? The lap was designed by Rob, I was so surprised with the amount of features he fit into the small area behind his shop. There were barriers, a succession of potentially-rideable boards, a run-up, straights, tight turns, and dusty dirt all in 1 mile!
I raced the A field and had a horrible time, maybe because of lack of recovery from the SOS Challenge from last Sunday, the heat, or perhaps my inability to race my cross bike since have I only touched it once so far! I came in 9th of 11, not the result I was expecting from Crossresults. However, it was such a treat to do this mid-week, after work, that all was forgotten after about 5 minutes! I cannot wait to do this again for the next two weeks!
