Irvine Lake, CA
After a couple of Enduro races, and lots of DH training, it seems my XC legs have all but disappeared. Even at 20 lbs less than my last XC venture, my results were a little disappointing to say the least. Apparently pounds 210 thru 230 are the endurance pounds. Who’da thunk!
It never seizes to amaze me. The Over the Hump weekday bike race series has to be about the most successful race series anywhere. It is no accident either. The promoters of this race really know how to throw a party. That’s the feeling you get. It’s a party that just happens to have a bike race tossed in for good measure. Once again the crowds were enormous... and on a Tuesday no less!
The weather was a bit on the warm side at 85 degrees, and trail conditions were dry and dusty to say the least, scorched and barren to say the most. 12 Clydesdales lined up with me for the 6:00 PM race start. We were to do 3 five mile loops on a relatively flat course with only around 500 ft of climbing. In the end, after swapping places several times with the other Clydes, I wound up slotting in at a disappointing 10th.
On a side note; sadly this may be the last XC race I do on my El Mariachi Ti. Happily, however, I’ll be swapping it out soon for a 2016 Kona Kahuna DDL. Gotta have the bike match the Jersey. Can’t wait!
