This was the second year for this event that showcases the majority of the 30+ miles of trails in the Altoona Creek Mtb Park. These trails are an amazing blend of super fast, technical and moderate climbing. Weather was great, dirt was hero, and spirits were high on this warm fall day.
I lined up at the front and knew it would be a fast start considering it was only a 30 mile race, but that kind of mileage was perfect for me right now. The horn went off and I got a great start off the line and headed out in the top 5 in the short parade lap around the park before heading into the woods. As we headed into the woods I found myself in second place with a racer on my wheel. Two miles into the woods I could tell the guy in first was going over his head as we started some climbing so he waved me around along with the racer on my wheel. I was feeling quite good so I just ramped it up and kept a strong pace and eventually dropped the racer behind me after about 6 miles in on. I punched it for a few miles to open the gap and give me some cushion in case something went wrong. I settled back into a hard but comfortable smooth pace for the rest of the race and never saw anyone again.
I crossed the line in 1st place overall and 1st place in 40-49 class with a time of 2:22 and some Strava KOM's.
It was a well run event with a killer course that had 100% of all proceeds going directly to the trails and park! Lots of great swag, food, and well marked course. The fastest male and female finishers received the coolest hand made crowns by a local artist signifying the king and queen of Altoona! I can't wait until next year to defend the crown!
