Team Bikeman -
Crank the Kank is a 21 mile up-hill time trial from Conway to the top of the pass. The first 15 miles are a gradual, big-ring climb leading to the last 7 miles of 6% or 7% grade. Since neither my wife nor I are morning people, we barely arrived on time to register, earning me number 172 of 173 racers. At least I wouldn't get passed by more than 1 rider! Riders set out at 30-second intervals, so I had plenty of time to warm up and check out the race scene. Mine seemed to be the only Bikeman jersey in sight, and racers were setting off on equipment running the gamut from full time-trial rigs and skin suits to hybrids and cut-offs. Once I finally got to start I settled into a good rhythm, passing a few people along the way.
Three sections of road construction were unpleasant to negotiate, but bike and body weathered the rough stuff without too much trouble. When the steep section began the ride definitely got challenging and I was glad for my 26-tooth cog in the back. I managed to finish strong with a bit of a sprint to the end. I ended up finishing in the middle of the pack at 23rd in the veterans category with a time of 1:21:41. I'll definitely want to try this one again--I'm confident that I can get my time below 1:20.
