Experts lined up at around 11:15 for 2 X 10 mile laps of extremely muddy racing. (While lined up, the entire Expert field had to make way for teammate Jason M. who was donned in mud and completing another endurance lap.) The course is 90 % single track and significantly rocky with a few climbs and a couple technical descents. Even in the extreme mud, with the exception of a short, steep climb that is hit or miss even when dry, I was able to ride the entire course. I’ll attribute staying on two wheels to my Panaracer FIRE XC’s which offered a great combo of speed, traction and cornering. And no pinch flats at ~33 PSI on a course that loves to pinch. The braking situation was not as swell. I have burned through two sets of disc brake pads in as many races. The stock Avid pads just don’t hold up in extreme conditions. Definitely lost a few minutes stopping to adjust my BB7's and being conservative on the descents and twisty sections. All said and done, I ended up 7th out of 13 starters in the SRII (30 -34) category. Note that the attached photo was snapped at the start, thus I'm still all shiny, by race's end I was brown.
