Carver has been in the carbon wheel business for a while now so we have had the opportunity to see a lot of rims come through for testing. We are always looking for the best value relative to performance so when we came across a 30mm external width, asymmetric 29er carbon rim that would build up into a 1330g Boost wheelset for the same price as our regular XC wheelset we thought it was too good to be true. We figured either our scale was out of whack or this thing is going to fold up on the first ride right? Wrong! We were blown away with the weight and strength of this wheel. Could we have actually broken the age old adage of "Light, affordable and strong. You pick two."? Well, maybe, but let's be realistic. This is probably a race day only XC wheelset for most riders. We haven't put a weight limit on these wheels but if you are 185lbs+ and/or looking for a wheelset to do enduro runs on this is probably not the wheelset for you. If, on the other hand, you are not allergic to Lycra and you are looking to shed some grams before your next marathon event this probably should be your next wheelset.
They are built up 28 hole front and rear laced 2X with CN mac Aero 424 bladed black spokes (think Sapim CX Ray) and black anodized alloy nipples. At the center of wheels are smooth rolling Novatec convertible hubs in black with alloy axles and an alloy freehub body. These hubs come in two versions. One that is fully convertible between 100mm QR and 15x100 thru axle in the front and 10x135mm QR and 12x142mm thru axle in the rear. (One configuration comes included with the each wheel, additional adaptors available separately). The other is dedicated Boost compatible. The hubs feature replaceable sealed cartridge bearings and a choice of Shimano/SRAM freehub body or SRAM XD driver which also have replaceable sealed cartridge bearings. The wheels also come complete with black anodized skewers for QR configurations. (No thru axles are included for thru axle configurations.)
Tipping the scale at 1330g with a price under $1k you would be hard pressed to find a better value in a wheelset that can approach the weight, stiffness and acceleration of the Carver Carbon 29er UL XC carbon wheelset.
