Carrabassett Fat Tire Race

by Anders Larson

Second fat bike race of the year. I am fully aware that I’m not that fast yet, so I looked at this as another opportunity to get a really good training ride in. It was also a nice chance to go to the mountains and see some winter.

The course was completely on the cross country ski trails and the outdoor center. Temps were in the mid 20’s and rising. Overall it was a good day for a race. The trails were quite firm, but some of the steep climbs were softening up toward the end of the race.

I had an ok start, and just like the Rangeley race, I realized I could not sustain the pace of the first groups. I settled into a pace that I thought I could do for the 20 miles and 2000 feet of climbing, yet towards the end I started to bonk pretty hard. I was able to finish 13th out of the 27 riders in the “long” course. The promoters did a fine job putting together a nice, casual event. I hope to get up there again this winter and check out some of the singletrack. I’m pretty psyched to have registered for the 50K race this July. The last time I did it was in 2017, and I had a great time.
