Race Day
My bike riding season began today! In December my wife and I were gifted our first child, a beautiful baby girl, Winifred Joan Trueworthy and with this my personal priorities shifted from their typical cadence of BIKE BIKE BIKE. Today marks my first physical bike ride of the season right here on race day! Armed with a new special weapon, O-Chain (www.ochain.bike) purchased from Bikeman.com and expertly installed by Bath Cycle and Ski I was ready and eager to let the tires roll once again. I arrived an hour before event start which allowed me a couple of lift service practice runs to help shake off the cobwebs. First practice run was physically exhausting and I quickly went back to the car for contact lenses to for obvious reasons.
The benefits of O-Chain were immediately noticeable, drastically reducing pedal kick-back and smoothing out the ride, reducing unneeded strain on the legs. The stage offerings were excellent today. Yellowjacket (black diamond + technical) and Pinball Wizard -> Lower Whiplash (blue square technical + flowy). With tire inserts and O-Chain installed my ‘big rig’ had no troubles navigating the terrain, rolling easily over any and all obstacles in our path. I was lucky to get my first run in quickly as when I arrived back at top for Stage 2, Stage 1 had been placed on-hold due to a crash and injury. As the situation below was addressed and course cleared, competitors at top had plenty of time to talk and exchange stories of stoke. I was pleased to meet a few Gould Academy students from the Mid-Coast area who were familiar with and supporters of Bikeman.com. All expressed their lifelong good experiences with the quality of service the bike shop provides. Some time later Stage 1 was cleared and remaining riding completed their first runs then came the start of Stage 2. Run was fairly uneventful, feeling slow most of the Stage, but quick in a sector or two I did not have high expectations of my result upon finishing. Fast forward an hour to awards ceremony and I was stoked to learn I had placed 3rd of 8 riders in the Men’s 40+ category! What a way to start the season! On to the next!
