Chris Hinds Crit 2019

by Alan Starrett • July 06, 2019

I raced both the Cat 4 race and the 3/4 race which were separated by only 25 minutes. The Cat 4 race started with many riders trying for solo or small group attacks but none achieved much of a gap. Fellow Mainer and strong rider Mark Carpenter was in the race and I knew that if I stayed near him, I would have a good chance at a finish. I stuck on his wheel for almost the entirety of the second half of the race which paid off when he launched from around 15th position around the final bend, and I managed to stay with him and secure 7th place. After that race, I went back to the car for water and stayed a little too long when the gun blew for the start of the 3/4 race. I hopped on my bike and got into TT mode to catch the group. I chased for the first 3 laps and finally managed to get back onto the group. I sat in around midpack to recover from the effort. About halfway through the race I got caught up in a crash around one of the corners. Luckily no real injuries, just some road rash. I rushed over to the pit to get my free lap and get back in the race. I hopped back in and found the trusty wheel of Carpenter again, this time having to weave through traffic in the final sprint for 10th place. These two results allowed me to upgrade to cat 3.
