Riding on ice? Get these., 12.9.2009

After a winter commuting on some homebrew studded tires, I did my hands and patience a favor and bought a pair of Hakkapelittas. Yes, they're spendy for tires you'll only want to use 2 or 3 months of the year, but the carbide studs refuse to wear or pull out, and the grip is great. Over clear pavement, these don't feel as sure (though I never had a problem), on snow they act like any other mild-tread tire, but hit some glare ice and you'll feel locked into place. The straight-line traction is amazing, like velcro, and cornering is pretty sure as long as you don't lean the bike too far.
These are heavy, and the studs add rolling resistance, but you'll stay upright where non-studded tires would have dropped you. I put 240 miles on mine last winter, and they still look new. Store them right over the warmer months, and these could be a 10-year or more investment.

This is the preferred studded tire used here in Minnesota. The tread pattern is also good for snow. Since I haven't compared them to others, I can't give a 5 star rating without comparing. However, they work great on ice and hard packed snow, and are the commuting tire of choice.
